Purpose:
This study was performed to assess the efficacy and effectiveness of dexamethasone nanoparticles on ocular inflammation in a rabbit animal model.
Methods:
30 rabbits were selected and inflammation was induced by injecting 0.1 ml of 70% ethanol in the anterior chamber of the eye. Then the animals were divided into 3 groups, including the first group, received a drop of micellar polymeric dexamethasone 0.1%, the second, received a drop of the conventional dexamethasone 0.1%, and the third group, received polymeric micellar nanocarriers into cul-de-sac of the right eye. Then, to assess drug penetration rate, 80 ml aqueous humor from the anterior chamber were sampled 30 minutes and 6 hours after pouring drops. Finally, the effect of drugs on reducing inflammation was examined using a slit-lamp
Results:
significant differences in terms of influence, corneal edema, inflammation and redness of eye were observed in the group of micellar polymeric dexamethasone. However, no significant difference in the anterior chamber cell reaction was observed.
Conclusion:
The polymeric micellar dexamethasone has two times penetration effect into the anterior chamber and was more effective than conventional dexamethasone .But the anterior chamber cells was similar with both drugs.
