Purpose:
To investigate the long term outcomes of intravitreal bevacizumab (IVB) in patients with aggressive posterior retinopathy of prematurity (ROP)
Methods:
All patients with aggressive posterior ROP treated with IVB during 2011-2012 were recruited and underwent evaluation under anesthesia in a cross-sectional study. Success of bevacizumab injection and the need for further procedures as well as peripheral vascularization of the retina was assessed.
Results:
Results: Mean follow up was 30.5±4.6 (22-38)months. From 123 eyes of 66 patients, 102(77.2%) eyes treated with a single IVB injection, 4(3%) eyes required the second IVB, 18(13.7%) eyes needed laser therapy and 8 eyes(6.1%) progressed to stage 4 ROP and required vitrectomy; 4 of them had attached retina after vitrectomy. After IVB injections, 61eyes (57.5%) had complete peripheral vascularization and 45 eyes (42.5%) showed peripheral avascularity.
Conclusion:
A major proportion of eyes with aggressive posterior ROP still had peripheral avascular area, 30 months after IVB injections.
