Purpose:

To compare microbiological spectrum and in vitro antibiotic sensitivity between nasolacrimal duct obstructions (NLDO) of children and adults.

Methods:

In this prospective study, 48 cases with congenital NLDO and 48 cases with adult NLDO were included. Bacterial cultures were obtained from purulent discharges or inferior fornix. The sensitivity of the bacteria to 12 antibiotics was evaluated. The proportions of bacterial isolates were compared between children and adult groups.

Results:

The proportions of bacterial isolates were significantly different between children and adult groups (chi-square test, p=0.001). In the children group, streptococcus pneumonia (13 cases, 27.1%) and streptococcus viridans (9 cases, 18.8%) were the most common isolated organisms. In the adult group, staphylococcus epidermidis (12 cases, 25.0%) and mixed infections (7 cases, 14.6%) were most common. In children group, ciprofloxacin (95% sensitivity), vancomycin (93.8% sensitivity), and chloramphenicol (84.6% sensitivity) and in adult group, vancomycin (96% sensitivity), ciprofloxacin (88.2% sensitivity), and cefazolin (85.3% sensitivity) showed the highest in vitro antibiotic sensitivity.

Conclusion:

The microbiological spectrum may be different between NLDO in children and adults. Vancomycin and ciprofloxacin may be effective antibiotics in treating NLDO-associated infections in children and adults.
