Laparoscopic surgeries are becoming more popular. While Laparoscopy has many benefits, some physiological changes occur during the operation which can be harmful for the body. An increase in intra ocular pressure is one of them. Magnesium has some analgesic and relaxing effects. This study was done to see whether magnesium can prevent the ocular hypertension during laparoscopy or no.

40 adult patients weighed 50 to 80 kg, who had been scheduled for laparoscopic cholecystectomy with gas insufflation, were recruited into the study. Patients were divided in two groups .control group received placebo and case group received 30 mg/kg magnesium sulfate before the operation. Mean atrial pressure, heart rate, peak and plate airway pressures, and intraocular pressure was measured and recorded during the operation.

intra ocular pressure and mean atrial pressure was significantly lower in case group. (p<0.05) no meaningful differences were observed between the groups regarding heart rate or airway pressures. (p>0.05)

Intra venous Magnesium sulfate can control the intra ocular changes during laparoscopic surgeries and can be used as a pre-medication.
