Purpose:
To demonstrate color Doppler imaging (CDI) changes of orbital and ocular vessels in relation to the disease severity and activity in patients diagnosed with thyroid eye disease (TED).
Methods:
51 eyes of 30 patients diagnosed with thyroid eye disease (TED) and 40 eyes of 20 normal control group were enrolled in this study and after comprehensive ophthalmic examination they underwent color Doppler imaging studies. In TED group clinical activity score and disease severity score was calculated for each eye. Color Doppler imaging (CDI) results were compared between case and control groups.
Results:
There was a significant difference in superior ophthalmic vein maximum flow rate (SOV Max), central retinal vein maximum flow rate (CRV Max), superior ophthalmic artery end diastolic velocity (SOA- EDV) and superior ophthalmic artery resistance index (SOA-RI) between case and control groups. There was a significant difference in superior ophthalmic vein minimum flow rate (SOV Min), SOV Max, CRV Max and SOA-RI between eyes with CAS ?3 and <3.
Conclusion:
As CDI changes are significantly different in case/ control, active /inactive and mild/ moderate to severe patients we probably can use it as a noninvasive imaging method for better evaluation, better prognosis estimation and follow up of thyroid eye disease patients.
