Purpose:
Assessment of relation between central choroidal thickness (CCT) and central macular thickness (CMT) changes after treatment of diabetic macular edema.
Methods:
This study is an interventional case series study. Twenty eyes of twenty patients with center involved diabetic macular edema were included. All patients were naïve and best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was less than 20/40. All patients received three intravitreal bevcizumab injections (IVB) monthly. CCT, CMT and BCVA were evaluated before, 3 and 6 months after treatment.
Results:
Base line BCVA was 0.42±0.26 logMAR which significantly improved to 0.32±0.22 after 6 months. (p=0.007). Base line, 3 and 6 months after treatment, CMT were 470±105 µm, 392±104 and 324±122 respectively that decreased significantly.(p<0.001) Baseline, 3 and 6 months after treatment, CCT were 265±79 µm, 251±81 and 232±82µm respectively that decreased significantly.(p,0.001) We found statistically significant relation between the change of CCT and CMT. Each 100 µm change in CCT would cause 44.3 µm (95% CI: 8.7 to 79.9, r=0.567, P=0.017) change in CMT.
Conclusion:
Central choroidal thickness in patients with diabetic macular edema decreased after IVB injection and reduction of CCT was correlated with central macular thickness reduction.
