Purpose:
To compare the efficacy of single-session 360-degree SLT in reduction of intraocular pressure in pseudoexfoliation glaucoma (PXG) and primary open angle glaucoma (POAG).
Methods:
A prospective, nonrandomized comparative study performed between March 2010 and March 2013 at the Rassoul Akram Hospital, Tehran, Iran. Patients with uncontrolled PXG or POAG eyes while on maximally IOP-lowering medications enrolled the study. 360-degree SLT was performed and patients were followed up for 12 months.
Results:
25 eyes with PXG and 28 eyes with POAG were included in study. The mean (±SD) IOP was 22.9 (±3.7) mm Hg in the POAG and 25.7 (±4.4) mmHg in the PXG group at baseline and decreased to 18.4 (±3.2) and 18.0 (±3.9) mmHg in the POAG (p<0001 and P<0.02), and to 17.9 (±5.5) and 21.0 (±6.6) mmHg in the PXG group (p<0001 and P =0.47) at 6 and 12 months, respectively. The success rate was 75% in the POAG compared to 94% in the PXG group (p=0.08) at 6 months, and 29% and 25% at 12 months, respectively (p=0.9)
Conclusion:
The efficacy of 360-degree SLT was more pronounced early in postoperative period in patients with PXG whereas there was no difference between two groups at 12-month follow-up.
