Purpose:
Here we presented Spectral domain OCT (SD-OCT) findings in an adult case of severe ocular injury resulting in macular schisis with severe disruption of visual acuity.
Methods:
On presentation, Snellen visual acuities (VA) were 20/20 for the right eye and two meters count finger for the left eye.
Results:
Spectral domain OCT showed thickened retina, disruption of outer nuclear and inner segment/outer segment (IS/OS) layer below fovea and cystic disruption of outer plexiform layer. Following two weeks of systemic steroid treatment, visual acuity improved to 20/120 but he was complaining of central scotoma. At this time SD-OCT showed resolution of macular edema. IS/OS and outer plexiform layers were distorted and scar tissue was evident under fovea leading to thinning of central fovea.
Conclusion:
With SD-OCT our ability to image microstructure in vivo has improved. With the use of OCT retinal structural changes following trauma may clarify the process and detect the severity of damage.
