Purpose:
|
To evaluate the results of conjunctival culture in patients with common canalicular
obstruction (CCO)
|
Methods:
|
In this prospective study, 49 adult patients with unilateral CCO and 41 age- and
sex-matched controls without NLD problem were evaluated. Conjunctival specimens were
obtained from the inferior fornices. The culture results were compared with those of normal
controls
|
Results:
|
The sex and mean age was statistically similar between the two groups (P>0.05).
The culture was positive for bacterial growth in 24 eyes (48.9%) with CCO and 17 control
eyes (41.4%, P=0.5). From 24 CCO eye with positive bacterial cultures, 14 eyes (28.5%) had
abnormal bacterial growth; abnormal bacterial types in 10 eyes and overgrowth of normal
colonizing flora (staphylococcus epidermidis or staphylococcus saprophyticus > 60 colonies
in a sample unit), in 4 eyes
|
Conclusion:
|
CCO was associated with colonization of abnormal conjunctival bacteria and
overgrowth of normal colonizing flora in a significant number of patients
