Purpose:
To investigate confocal scan features of corneal subbasal nerve plexus and epithelial dendritic cells in patients with Acanthamoeba keratitis (AK) and Herpes Simplex Keratitis (HSK).
Methods:
Confocal scan records of patients with clinical and confocal scan findings of AK and HSK as well as confocal scan records of normal applicants were reviewed. The density and morphologic parameters of epithelial dendritic cells (DCs) and changes in subbasal nerve plexus were evaluated and statistically compared between the groups.
Results:
A total of 52 eyes of 52 patients were enrolled: 20 eyes from 20 patients with clinical and confocal scan features of AK, 12 eyes of 12 patient with clinical and confocal scan features suggestive of HSK, and 20 eyes from 20 normal applicants. Means of density, numbers and area of DCs were significantly increased in both AK and HSK groups compared to controls (P<0.001). Main nerve trunk number, nerve branches, total nerve numbers, nerve diameter, and subbasal nerve density were statistically lower in AK and HSK groups than controls (P<0.001). No significant difference in above mentioned parameters was noted between AK and HSK patients.
Conclusion:
It seems that there is a strong correlation between immune response and corneal innervation in the AK and HSK.
