Purpose:
To investigate correlation of various orbital dimensions with orbital vector angle.
Methods:
A cross-sectional study was done to measure various orbital dimensions in the axial and sagittal plane CT scans of cases in sagittal and axial planes. Correlation between various anthropometric structural parameters in the orbit such as orbital vector angle, the length of the orbital walls and the optic nerve length was investigated in three groups regarding orbital vector angle as vector positive (VP), vector negative between -15 to 0 degrees (VN1) and vector negative less than -15 degrees (VN2).
Results:
Thirty cases with mean age of 36.8 years were recruited. Eight, 15 and 7 cases were in VP, VN1 and VN2 groups respectively. Pearson correlation analysis showed a statistically significant linear correlation between vector angle and anteroposterior length of orbital floor (correlation coefficient= +0.406, P-value=0.032). Statistical analysis revealed a correlation coefficient of -0.433 between vector angle and length of lateral orbital wall (P-value= 0.021). Other parameters did not have any correlation with vector angle.
Conclusion:
Lower anteroposterior length of the orbital floor, that can be a representative index for hypoplastic maxillary bone, has positive correlation with negative orbital vector.
