Purpose:

To report the efficacy of mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) as adjunctive therapy for the treatment of multiple sclerosis (MS) associated uveitis.

Methods:

In this retrospective, non-randomized interventional case series, patients diagnosed with MS associated uveitis who were treated by MMF as an adjunct therapy to systemic corticosteroid were studied. The steroid sparing effects of MMF for resolution of uveitis and improvement in visual acuity were assessed.

Results:

Thirty eyes of 15 patients were studied. Mean age was 34.5± 8.3 years (range 17–48) and female predominated (n=14, 93.3%). Except for one patient with anterior uveitis, all had bilateral chronic intermediate uveitis. In three patients (20%), ocular symptoms preceded the diagnosis of MS. During treatment, visual acuity improved in 18 eyes (60.0%), did not change in eight eyes (26.7%), and deteriorated in four eyes (13.3%). At last follow up, all eyes were quiet without macular edema. None of the patients needed discontinuation of the treatment due to the intolerable side effects.

Conclusion:

In our series, characteristic findings of uveitis among patients with MS were consistent with previous reports. As a corticosteroid sparing agent, MMF had beneficial effects on vision and intraocular inflammation with an acceptable safety profile.
