Purpose:
To find the characteristics of microbial keratitis after intracorneal ring segment (ICRS) implantation.
Methods:
In a retrospective study, we included patients with ICRS implantation and documented keratitis developing after the ICRS implantation. Both Keraring and Intacs and also both femtosecond (FS) and mechanical technique were included during the study. Smear, culture and type of corneal abnormalities were documented.
Results:
We documented four cases of bacterial keratitis after ICRS implantation, two cases after manual technique and two after FS, we documented 3 Keraring and Intacs implantations, three ulcers developed first inferiorly in the inferior ring extending to the superior part, the other one developed a total ring infiltration involving two nearly vertical segments. Two cases developed staphylococcus aureus and the other one staphylococcus epidermidis and the last one didn`t show any result in the culture although the smear was gram positive cocci, all rings were explanted, two cases underwent amniotic membrane transplantation( AMT) and one case underwent penetrating keratoplasty(PKP).
Conclusion:
The study showed an incidence rate of 1.5% for microbial keratitis after ICRS implantation, it seems that early removal of any suspicious keratitis supports the best result preventing corneal melting.
