Purpose:
|
To report the association between the personality characteristics and penetrating ocular trauma.
|
Methods:
|
In Charshanbe Soori Festival (an annual firework in Iran before new year), a total 41 patients with penetrating injury were included in this study. The characteristics of ocular trauma were documented; also all patients underwent a full psychiatric examination, checking the personality characteristics by SCID II questionnaire.

Results:
|
Among the included patients, there were only four females; there were also 17 cases of intraocular foreign body (IOFB). Antisocial personality disorder was significantly more prevalent between the included patients R=0.47, Interestingly, all of involved patients having personality disorder were male, antisocial personality disorder resulted in more severe and devastating penetrating globe injury according to Ocular Trauma Score (OTS)(R=0.33). Interestingly, the group with Antisocial personality disorder had more chance for recurrent ocular trauma in this festival (P=0.03).

Conclusion:

Antisocial patients were more prone to ocular trauma especially more severe and recurrent trauma. This study showed the importance of psychiatric evaluation in penetrating ocular trauma.
