Purpose:
We describe safety and success of subretinal fluid (SRF) drainage in a consecutive series of patients who received scleral buckling placement for retinal detachment using insulin needle drainage.
Methods:
This retrospective study was conducted on 533 eyes with retinal detachment referred to Feiz hospital, Isfahan, Iran. Patients were undergoing scleral buckling placement and SRF was drained by simple insulin syringe needle. Failure rates and any ocular complication were recorded.
Results:
Mean age of patients was 51.9±17.6 years. 64.9% of patients were male . There were 55.4% phakic, 40.7% pseudophakic and 3.9% aphakic eyes.In 470 cases ,SRF has been completely drained by one attempt, while in 9 cases the task has been accomplished after the second attempt. In 54 cases, drainage has been partially done. intraoperative complications of our technique were moderate to massive subretinal hemorrhage (4 eyes, 0.75%), choroidal detachment (2 eyes, 0.35%), and non-successful drainage in one eye. there was no retinal incarseration.
Conclusion:
The simple insulin syringe needle drainage technique was useful, simple method to SRF drainage.
