Purpose:
: to analyse the rate and relationship between preoperative risk factors and intraoperative complications of phacoemulsification surgeries performed by ophthalmology residents.
Methods:
prospective study of preoperative risk factors and complications of phacoemulsification Surgeries performed by resident in anteriorsegment clinic of Khatam eye hospital.
Results:
charts of 475 patients operated by 13 ophthalmology residents , were evaluated. Intraoperative complications rate was 17.5%. major complications with potential effect on surgical final results, as posterior capsule rupture and zonular dehiscence and vitreous loss, had an incidence rate of 7.2%. On univariate analysis , significant preoperative risk factors were poor red reflex (P-V=0.001) ,psudoexfoliation (P-V=0.002) , poor pupil dilation (P-V=0.003) , control cloudiness (P-V=0.003) , dense cataract (P-V=0.004) , shallow anterior chamber (P-V=0.02) and older age (P-V<0.05)
Conclusion:
Correspondence between intraoperative complications and some suggested preoperative risk factors shows that a careful preoperative examination or using of a systemic risk stratification system may predict risk full cases and could be beneficial in preventing complication in resident phacoemulsification.
