Purpose:
|
Regarding to importance and high incidence of ocular injuries worldwide, we assess characteristics of ocular trauma resulting in hospitalization.
|
Methods:
|
In this study, the patients who were referred to Feiz eye hospital (Isfahan, Iran) due to open glob injuries. Data including age, sex, cause of the injury, site of the injury, visual acuity, the time interval between injury and admission .

Results:
|
This study consists of 1042 patients with mean age of 24.6 (range 1-94 years) including 80.3% male and 19.7% female. 79 patients (7.6%) were NLP at admission time. Penetrating trauma was responsible for most of the ocular lacerations (70.24%).Glasses with the incidence of 11.8% and knife (10.6%) were the most common agents; 44.6% have injury of cornea, 32% cornea and sclera and 23.4% sclera. Enucleation performed in 32 patients (3%) and endophthalmitis occurred in 2%.

Conclusion:
|
Sex and age are important factors for evaluation of eye trauma. Males are at higher risk for ocular trauma than females. Penetrating traumas were more common than blunt traumas in hospitalized patients.
