Purpose:
long term visual acuity outcome after congenital cataract surgery at Imam Hossein Medical Center (2004 to 2014).
Methods:
: records of 120 patients were studied. Traumatic, metabolic cataract, age<5 years at the last visit and follow up<6 months were excluded. Cases with incomplete files were recruited and reexamined. Finally, the records of 42 patients (71 eyes) were included.
Results:
20 males and 22 females with 11.80±6 years of ag ,bilateral and unilateral cataract was seen in 69% and 31% of cases. Posterior and anterior subcapsular opacity was the most common and rarest type of cataract. Their median age of operation and surgical interval was 3 years and 3 months, respectively. The most common method of refractive error correcting was the combination of IOL and glasses (56.3%) with the mean BCVA of 0.29±0.28 LogMAR. Amblyopia (56%), glaucoma (23.90%) and posterior capsular opacity (16.40%) were observed during their follow up (76±65 months). Unilateral cataract, aphakia, nystagmus, being female and strabismus were risk factors of VA.
Conclusion:
56% have amblyopia. May be due to late operation , longer surgical interval, partial compliance of amblyopia therapy. we markedly recommended lens opacity screening through red reflex examination at birth to reduce the age of surgery.
