Purpose:
To review the recorded data of infectious keratitis cases after photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) from March 2006 to April 2014 in Farabi eye hospital
Methods:
In this retrospective study; medical records of post-PRK patients (62312 eyes) were searched for cases of infectious keratitis. Infectious keratitis had been documented in 36 eyes. Patients’ age, sex, presenting symptoms, risk factors, microbial culture results, medications used to treat, presenting and final visual acuities and surgeries (if needed) were recorded.
Results:
The rate of keratitis was 0.057% in this study. The most common risk factor was blepharitis. The most common presenting sign was corneal epithelial defect and the most common presenting symptom was pain. Most of the cases diagnosed between 2nd and 10th day of surgery (87%). Cultures were positive in 23 eyes (63.9 %). The most frequent organism was Staphylococcus aureus (6 eyes: 16.7%). Final visual acuity was 20/20 or better in 9 cases (25%).
Conclusion:
Infectious keratitis is a rare but potentially vision threatening complication of PRK. Visual outcome is acceptable after treatment in most cases.
