Purpose:
|
To evaluate the effect of eyelid squinting on corneal topography.
|
|
Methods:
|
80 patients with a mean age of 25.8, who had been referred to the refractive surgery clinic, were recruited. The study population was divided into two groups: The first group included 40 consecutive patients who wore glasses most of the time . The second group consisted of 40 consecutive patients who had a myopic refractive error of more than 1.5 Diopters, but instead of using glasses, narrowed their palpebral aperture by squinting to get better vision and had not used glasses for the last 6 months or more (uncorrected group). All patients underwent topographic imaging and refraction. The two groups were compared as far as twelve topographic indices and refraction.

Results:
|
Patients of the uncorrected group had higher astigmatism compared to the corrected group. Five topographic indices were significantly higher in the uncorrected group, indicating a more irregular cornea. Subjects in the uncorrected group also had a significantly higher superior steepening rate.

Conclusion:
|
This study reveals that in a normal population, long-time eye squinting habit is associated to the degree of astigmatism, corneal topography, and I-S index, as well as to other corneal irregularity indices.
