Purpose:
To determine the Intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus in Isfahan.
Methods:
The medical records of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus reffered to Isfahan Feiz hospital between 2013-2014, were reviewed and demographic characteristics, duration of diabetes, severity of retinopathy and IOP were collected and analyzed.
Results:
A total of 1228 patients were evaluated. The mean (±standard deviation) age of the patients was 58.4 ± 8.7 years. The mean (±standard deviation) duration of diabetes was 12.2 ± 5.6 years. The mean IOP was 15.55 mmHg. The mean IOP in right and left eye was 15.6 mmHg and 15.5 mmHg respectively. The difference between IOP of the two eyes was not statistically significant. Also there was no statistically significant correlation between severity of retinopathy and IOP, whereas duration of diabetes had positive correlation with IOP, so IOP increased with increasing duration of diabetes. On the other hand, the IOP negatively correlated with age, thus IOP decreased with increasing age in the diabetic patients. Diabetic women had higher IOP than men.
Conclusion:
IOP in diabetic patients depend on many factors including age, sex and duration of diabetes, but severity of retinopathy doesn't influence IOP.
