Purpose:
To evlauate the peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (PRNFL) in patients with old neglected full thickness macular hole (OFTMH) of more than one year duration.
Methods:
All patients who referred to our clinic with the diagnosis of OFTMH with one year or more history of visual loss in that eye or any OCT image evident of more than one year presence of macular hole included in this study. Full ophthalmic examination was done and a new OCT image of PRNFL thickness measurment was done using spectralis OCT and software version 6.The involved eye parameters were recorded. The contralateral normal eye was used as control and analysed statistically. Any glaucoma or history of optic nerve disease led to exclusion.
Results:
A total of 12 OFTMH patients inlcuded in this study 3 men and 9 women with average age 68 years. The global PRNFL thickness was 98 (13) micrometers in the invloved and 102 (17) in the control eye. The temporal sector average PRNFL thickness was 80 in the diseased and 68 in the control respectively. There was no statistically significant difference between the two eyes.
Conclusion:
Old macular hole is not associated with a significant loss of the optic nerve and PRNFL tissue.
