Purpose:
To report the safety and efficacy of mini 25-gauge pars plana vitrectomy as an alternative procedure to anterior chamber (AC) paracentesis in non-drainage scleral buckling (SB).
Methods:
In this case series, 34 patient with fresh uncomplicated rhegmatogenous RD (PVR
Results:
Thirty-four eyes (79% phakic; 15% pseudophakic and 6% with phakic artisan) were included. The number of breaks was one, two, three, and more in 22,3,6, and 1 eyes, respectively. In two cases no break was found. Intravitreal SF6 was injected in 17 eyes. Mean time of operations was 63.5 minutes and mean time for vitrectomies was 91 seconds. Retinal attachment was achieved in 33 out of 34 eyes (success rate=97.0%). Vitreous leak at the site of scleretomy, tiny vitreous hemorrhage, vitreous strand orientation were observed as complications. The surgeons reported a better comfort compared to their previous SB experiences.
Conclusion:
Considering the anatomical success and the safety observed in this study, we would suggest performing a small gauge mini vitrectomy instead of AC paracentesis to adjust IOP during non-drainage SB.
