Purpose:
To evaluate the accuracy of optic nerve head examination in a resident-based hospital.
Methods:
Four hundred twenty eyes of 210 volunteer patients underwent ocular examination including intraocular pressure (IOP) and optic nerve head examination by third- and fourth-year residents. Suspect cases were referred to an attending glaucoma specialist who then did a reevaluation. A comparison between these two examinations was completed using SPSS software version 22.
Results:
In this prospective study, 210 volunteer ≥ 40 years old were enrolled. Eighteen eyes from 420 cases were referred for reevaluation due to a suspect pattern of the optic nerve head. Among these cases, only one had a suspect optic nerve head and was referred for optic nerve head imaging. Other cases had a normal optic nerve head and retinal nerve fiber layer in examination.Five eyes of the referred group had large disc, 4 eyes had tilted disc, 2 eyes had optic atrophy, 2 eyes had physiologic large cup and 4 eyes had completely normal disc.
Conclusion:
This study showed a high rate of over diagnosis of glaucomatous optic neuropathy in residents’ examinations.
