Purpose:
To report an alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) of ethmoid sinus, recurring as an orbital mass in a young adult male
Methods:
A 23-year-old male with chief complaint of anosmia and mild proptosis was diagnosed with RMS of left ethmoid sinus and orbit following endoscopic biopsy of mass . He was treated with chemotherapy and radiation.
Results:
Twelve months after diagnosis and while still on maintenance chemotherapy, he returned with a large medial canthal mass and lateral globe displacement. Orbital CT scan revealed an extraconal mass in the medial orbit of the left eye, extending posteriorly, compressing the medial rectus muscle. Notably, ethmoid sinuses were clear. Incisional biopsy was performed and the diagnosis of recurrent alveolar RMS was confirmed
Conclusion:
Alveolar RMS of ethmoid sinus may recur as an orbital mass, even if the originating sinus is clear.
