Purpose:
To determine the effect of adjunctive intraoperative subtenon injection of triamcinolone acetonide (TA) on outcomes of AGV implantation.
Methods:
A total of 84 eyes of 80 patients were enrolled and stratified in four groups, namely failed trabeculectomy, uveitic glaucoma, neovascular glaucoma and other etiologies. Patients in each group were randomized to AGV implantation with TA or standard surgery.
Results:
Mean IOP was significantly lower one month after surgery in the TA group (P=0.016). In subsequent visits, although mean IOP was lower in the TA group, the difference was not significant. No difference was observed in the number of required glaucoma medications. At one year, no significant difference was observed in the number of glaucoma medications but a trend was observed for lower mean IOP in the triamcinolone group especially when adjusted for glaucoma medications (P=0.09).
Conclusion:
Application of adjunctive triamcinolone during AGV implantation may have short term benefit in IOP control. This effect seems to diminish during the first postoperative year.
