Purpose:
The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of retinopathy of premature Infants (ROP) and related risk in one-year follow-up of premature infants hospitalized in the NICU of Shahid sadoughi Hospital, Yazd, during 2010 to 2015.
Methods:
This prospective cohort study was conducted on 148 premature infants with following inclusion criteria: gestational age less than 30 weeks, weighted less than 1500 g, and weighted less than 2000 g with unstable situation. The possible factors led to infant ROP were recorded. The first eye examination was done 4-6 weeks after birth and continued as needed until the end of the first year.
Results:
Out of 296 studied eyes, 101 eyes (34.1%) were diagnosed with ROP. ROP in 60 eyes (59.4%) was healed without any treatment and 41 eyes (40.6%) were treated with laser or injection. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed a significant association between ROP with fetal gestational age, the use of mechanical ventilation, pneumothorax, and apnea (P<0.05).
Conclusion:
The results of this study suggest ROP screen for infants exposed to risk factors such as gestational age of the fetus, use of mechanical ventilation, pneumothorax, and apnea.
