Purpose:
To evaluate the factors leading to fine or poor stereopsis in patients with strabismus
Methods:
: This was a retrospective study on 259 patients, more than 7 years old, with any type of strabismus who had history of surgical or non-surgical intervention and followed up completely. Stereo acuity was measured using Titmus Stereo Fly test.
Results:
The patients were 164 (63%) male and 95(37%) female with mean age of 10.4±8.9 years. Improvement of stereopsis after treatment of eye deviation was significant (p=001). Fine stereopsis was more common in exotropia and less common in ET and XT with DVD(p=.006). Final residual deviation was significantly correlated with poor stereopsis (p=.002). Astigmatism more than 1 diopter was a risk factor for poor or (p=.002).Other risk factor for stereopsis have been included early onset of deviation, duration of the deviation, amblyopia, anisometropia and hyperopia. Fine stereopsis was more common with a history of symmetric surgery(p=.001).
Conclusion:
Treatment of amblyopia and correction of hyperopia and astigmatism are important in achieving fine stereopsis. Early intervention improves stereopsis. Residual eye deviation is a risk factor for poor stereopsis that should be prevented.
