Purpose:
To evaluate the complications necessitating an emergency referral after resident-performed intravitreal bevacizumab injections.
Methods:
In this prospective study, from January 2014 to January 2015, all patients who referred to the Ophthalmic Emergency Unit after resident-performed intravitreal injection of bevacizumab were evaluated. The cause of the referral and the outcome of the patients were recorded.
Results:
Twenty one emergency referrals from 2146 injections (0.97%) were recorded within 2 days after injections. The most common findings in patients with emergency referral were corneal epithelial defect in 8 eyes (38.1%), punctate epithelial erosion in 7 eyes (33.3%), air bubbles in vitreous cavity in 4 eyes (19.04%) and anterior uveitis in 2 eyes (9.5%). No case of infectious endophthalmitis was found. All patients responded to appropriate medications.
Conclusion:
This is the first prospective study specifically evaluating complications of resident performed bevaciumab injection. Majority of complications necessitating an emergency visit after intravitreal injection of bevacizumab are avoidable.
