Purpose:
To compare wide conjunctivalautograft and narrow strip conjunctivalautograft techniques, in terms of recurrence and complication rates, after performing a primary pterygium surgery.
Methods:
A prospective randomized study was performed of 39 eyes in 39 patients who had undergone pterygium surgery. 16 eyes were treated by wide conjunctivalautograft (Group A). 23 eyes were treated bynarrow-stripconjunctivalautograft (Group B).
Results:
A total of 39 eyes of 39 patients were operated. The groupA consisted of 16 patients (10 males and 6 females), mean age 56.44years, and the group B was 21 patients (18males and 5females), mean age 53.74 years. Postoperative recurrence was seen in one cases (6.3%) in the groupA, , and it was two cases (8.7%) in the groupB. Dellen was observed in one case (4.3%) of the groupB within the first week, it was not seen in the groupA.
Conclusion:
Narrow-strip CAU is safe and effective in the management of primary pterygia and may be a reasonable alternative to other kind of free conjunctivalautografts techniques for primary pterygium.
