Purpose:
The management of anisometropic amblyopia in children remains a challenge to pediatric ophthalmologists. The aim of this study is to determine outcomes of photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) for correcting amblyopiogenic refractive errors in children who are noncompliant for conventional therapies.
Methods:
Twelve children, 6 to 17 years old, 7 with anisohypropic amblyopia, 3 with anisomyopia and 2 with astigmatic amblyopia that were noncompliant with conventional therapy with glasses or contact lenses. The examination included cycloplegic refraction, uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA), best spectacle-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), biomicroscopy grading of postoperative haze, binocular vision (BV), and stereopsis were performed preoperatively and 1,3,6,12 month postopratively.
Results:
All 3 myopic, 2 astigmatic and 5 of 7 hyperopic patients reached to target SE. Among 7 hyperopic groups 2 patients SE were within 3 diopter of target. The most change was seen in astigmatism group that V.A reach to 10/10 and the least change were seen in hyoeropic group.
In most of the patients stereopsis was improved. There isn't any case of visually significant haze.
Conclusion:
PRK could have good results in amblyoptherapy, also it is safe and helpful in anisometropic amblyopia.
