Purpose:
Evaluating the effect of artificial tears on determining the retinal nerve fiber layer thickness by Optical Coherence Tomography(OCT)
Methods:
The study included 30 individuals(11 men and 19 women). The individuals randomly categorized into two groups.
The tear layer of each subject was measured using Schirmer Test 2. OCT scans were performed 3 times for each subject: Before instilling artificial tear, immediately after instilling and one week after continuous use of the drops. OCT scans were repeated 3 times each day. Data analysis was performed using SPSS software version 18.00 (SPSS, Inc. Chicago, Illinois, USA).
Results:
The mean Schirmer score before instillation was 19.41±5.88 in 5 minutes. The mean Schirmer score immediately after instilling the drops was 21.53±7.01 in 5 minutes. After one week of drop using, the mean Schirmer score was 21.23±7.16 in 5 minutes. The average RNFL thickness before the instillation was 129.05±11.93, immediately after the instillation was 130.41±11.92 and after one week of drop using was 131.56±12.05.
Conclusion:
Instilling artificial tear drops before measuring the Retinal Nerve Fiber Layer using OCT device does not affect the results. It is recommended to use these drops before performing the scan in order to enhance the image quality.
