Purpose:
|
Maxillofacial fractures are frequently complicated by injury to the eye and its adnexa . These injuries may result in loss of vision in one or both eyes or may compromise ocular function.
|
Methods:
|
200 patients with maxillofacial fractures referred to Besat hospital were examined by maxillofacial surgeons and cases which suspected to ocular injuries presents for ophthalmologic consult. Patient’s informations including maxillofacial fractures and ocular injuries recorded in their check lists.

Results:
|
The incidence of right eye injuries was more than left eye with difference of 5.9%. The prevalence of minor ocular injuries was 52.6%, a moderate injury was 24.8% and a major injury was 22.6%. the most common ocular injuries were periorbital ecchymosis and subconjunctival hemorrhage. There was significant relation between Lefort III and zygomaticomaxillary complex fractures with severity of ocular injures.

Conclusion:

The significant prevalence of ocular injuries following by maxillofacial trauma showed the necessity of immediate ophthalmic examine to prevent permanent visual loss.
