Purpose:
Amblyopia is one of the most common ophthalmic problems in children. This study was performed to evaluate the treatment outcomes of amblyopia by using full time patching with maintenance procedure.
Methods:
This descriptive-analytical study was performed from 1991 to 2013. Seventy five children with12 bilateral amblyopia (87eyes) were studied. The patient’s eye was patched for full time and then 6, 4, 2 and 1 hour until 9 years old. Increment of the visual acuity (VA), two lines or more in Snellen chart, was defined as success. Data was statistically analyzed by SPSS-18 software and T-Test, Friedman and Repeated Measurement tests.
Results:
VA improvement of amblyopic eye was significant (p<0.001) (3.42 line in snellen chart). VA improved significantly in both males (p<0.001) and females (p<0.001). There was a moderate correlation between age and the amounts of VA improvements (r=0.395, p<0.001). Moreover, VA of the eye with amblyopia improved regardless of its etiology. Overall successful rate in the treatment among 87 amblyopic eyes was 74.7% (65 eyes) and unsuccessful rate was 25.3% (22 eyes).
Conclusion:
The “full time patching with maintenance procedure” was effective in treatment of amblyopia regardless of the etiology of the amblyopia and gender with the successful rate of 74.7%.
