Purpose:
To report early outcomes of early collagen cross linking(CXL) in fungal keratitis.
Methods:
We included microbiologically documented fungal keratitis without of thinning, limbal extension and intraocular extension at presentation. Both groups underwent routine management for fungal keratitis. In this prospective study, we include eleven eyes in CXL group and seventeen eyes in none CXL group (NCXL)
Results:
At the end of follow up, five eyes in CXL group underwent penetrating keratoplasty (PKP) in acute phase compared to ten eyes in NCXL group (p= 0.14). There was not any case of perforation in both groups. Four in CXL group underwent conjunctival flap, two of them led to PKP because of progression, however in NCXL group three eyes underwent conjunctival flap, one of them leading to PKP. Median time of scar formation in non-surgical group in CXL group was 38 days in CXL group vs. 45 days in NCXL group (p= 0.046)
Conclusion:
According to this report, CXL in the early presentation of the fungal keratitis promised in decreasing in PKP in fungal keratitis shorter duration of scar formation, although there was not significant difference dealing with PKP.
