Purpose:
To report outcomes of early amniotic membrane transplantation (AMT) in bacterial keratitis.
Methods:
In a prospective clinical study, we evaluated early AMT transplantation during the first week of presentation in 12 cases bacterial keratitis without significant thinning; and compared the outcomes with 10 bacterial not thin keratitis cases without AMT transplantation (NAMT).
Results:
In cases with hypopyon, hypopyon cleared significantly earlier in AMT group compared to NAMT (P = 0.02), Peripheral corneal edema was resolved more rapidly in AMT group in comparison to NAMT (P=0.04). Using confocal scanning showed decreased Langerhans cellular infiltration. The scar size was not different between two groups after three months (P>0.05)
Conclusion:
AMT could result in earlier rehabilitation in bacterial keratitis although the final result could not be different between two groups.
