Purpose:
To Report toxic optic neuropathy after single dose of veterinary anti parasite in a young adult
Methods:
we reported a 34 year old man with sub acute and progressive bilateral loss of vision after four days following mistakenly ingestion of three closantel 500 mg tablets (30mg/kg).
Results:
Visual acuity at presentation was hand motion and light perception in right and left eye respectively. He was a well being man with mild photophobia. Fundus examination with indirect ophthalmoscope was normal except mild optic disc swelling in right eye without evidence of disc hemorrhage or exudate. Pattern VEP showed bilateral extinguished responses.
Conclusion:
Closantel with an unclear mechanism can damage to the central nervous system´s white mater, optic nerve and retinal photoreceptors .Although there is no gross pathologic finding in neural tissue, the ophthalmogist should take care of this very rare catastrophe.
