Purpose:
To report the syncope attack and its anticipated causes during ophthalmic setting examination.
Methods:
During 35780 emergency department slit lamp examinations; patients with sudden loss of consciousness and falling were documented. Demographic data, cardiovascular status and ophthalmic setting of examination were studied.
Results:
During the study, thirteen cases of syncope during ophthalmic examinations were documented, the mean age was 21, there were 8 men (37/100000 men) and 5 women (34/100000 women) on in men, only three patients, reported abnormal cardiovascular examination; all of them aged more than 40(median: 57). Ten cases of 13 syncopes developed during eye manipulation in slit lamp examination(R=0.35), interestingly five patients developed syncope when the slit lamp was upper than the relief position of the patient (R=0.54), and four patients developed syncope early in morning while fasting.
Conclusion:
Ophthalmologists should take care of syncope during slit lamp examination especially in young, fasting and inconveniently sitting patients.
