Purpose:
To report a case of upper eyelid swelling and ptosis caused by silicone oil migration in a patient after transconjunctival sutureless 23-gauge pars plana vitrectomy and intraocular silicone oil injection.
Methods:
A 36-year-old female was referred with total retinal detachment and superatemporal giant dialysis secondary to trauma to the left eye .Transconjunctival sutureless 23-gauge pars plana vitrectomy and intraocular silicone oil (1300 centistokes) injection were performed. After about 5 months she came back with left upper eyelid and periorbital swelling.
Results:
Palpation of the eyelid revealed soft and mobile subcutaneous small lumps that were not tethered to the skin. CT scan of the orbit showed an 11x 8 mm soft tissue density mass in lateral inferior aspect of left orbit. Transcutaneously surgical exploration was performed. The patient was seen after one week postoperatively and there was significant improvement of the ptosis.
Conclusion:
Eyelid swelling and ptosis caused by silicone oil migration after retinal detachment surgery is very rare and this is one of the few reports in the literature.
