Purpose:
To evaluate the efficacy of estradiol eye drop compared with tearlose eye drops for the treatment of menopause women with dry eye.
Methods:
28eyes of 14 menopausal patients with dry eye were evaluated. One eye was assigned randomly to receive tearlose eye drops twice daily, and the other to receive estradiol eye drop 2 times a day, for 8 weeks.
Values for the Schirmer’s test with and without anesthesia and TBUT were assessed between the 2 groups at baseline, 4 weeks and 8 weeks after starting treatment and 4 weeks after cessation of the treatment. Dry eye related ocular symptoms were evaluated by questionnaire. Hormonal assay was performed at baseline and 1 month after cessation of treatment.
Results:
TBUT, Schirmer with and without anesthesia were statically significant changed in each group, from base line at the fourth visit. ( P values 0.031, 0.009, 0.008 respectively). TBUTvalues showed statistically significant improvement in estradiol group (P value 0.004). In treatment group, reduction of dry eye severity was statistically different from the control group. ( P value < 0.001) Hormonal values did not show significant changes.
Conclusion:
Estradiol eye drop improves TBUT results and dry eye severity in post menopausal women.
