Purpose:
To report the outcomes of photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) in patients with labial herpes simplex infection
Methods:
In this prospective interventional case series, patients with clinical manifestation of herpetic ulcer on lips underwent PRK using Technolas 217z100 P excimer laser between June 2012 and March 2014 at Navid didegan Eye Clinic, Mashhad, Iran. All patients received Acyclovir 400 mg three times daily before surgery until complete recovery (10 days). Patients were observed for occurrence of herpetic keratitis at least 12 months.
Results:
Thirty- two eyes of 16 patients with apparent clinical manifestation of labial herpetic infection were identified among those for whom PRK was scheduled to be performed. Full ophthalmologic examinations were done. Medication for labial ulcer was administered. All procedures were uneventful. No dendritic ulcers due to herpes simplex keratitis appeared in close follow up. Final visual acuity was 20/20 (twenty-four eyes) and 20/25 (eight eyes).
Conclusion:
PRK is a safe procedure for improving uncorrected vision in patients suffering from labial herpetic infection. Oral treatment is appropriate when performing PRK on these cases to prevent herpetic keratitis as a possible complication.
