Purpose:
To evaluate the clinical outcomes after implantation of Semicircular corneal inlay by means of femtosecond laser technology in Pellucid Marginal Degeneration.
Design: Prospective, consecutive, nonrandomized, clinical trial
Methods:
A total of 11 eyes of 11 patients with ages ranging from 30 to 43 years were included. All cases were diagnosed with advanced Pellucid Marginal Degeneration and were candidates for penetrating keratoplasty.
Semicircular intrastromal corneal inlays made from Hexafocon A were implanted in all cases into an intrastromal corneal pocket created by means of femtosecond technology. Visual, refractive, corneal topography, and pachymetric changes were evaluated during a 6-month follow-up. In addition, corneal biomechanical changes were evaluated by means of the Ocular Response Analyzer.
Results:
A significant improvement in UDVA was observed 1 month after surgery (P=0.008), which was consistent with the significant reduction in cylinder (P=0.008). Corneal astigmatism reduced significantly (P=0.002) which was correlated with the magnitude of reduction in corneal coma-like aberrations (r=0.7, P=0.006). A statistically significant decrease in total higher order aberrations was found 1 month after surgery (P=0.004).
Conclusion:
Semicircular intrastromal corneal inlay implantation using femtosecond technology in Pellucid Marginal Degeneration may be considered an alternative to PKP.
