Purpose:
To compare the long-term outcomes of resident versus attending performed trabeculectomy.
Methods:
In this retrospective study 41 resident performing trabeculectomy under supervision of attending were compared with 41 attending performed trabeculectomy. The primary outcome measure was surgical success defined as intraocular pressure (IOP) ≤ 21 mm Hg (criterion A) and IOP ≤ 16 mm Hg (criterion B), with at least 20% reduction in IOP, either with no medication (complete success) or with no more than 2 medications (qualified success). Data analysis was performed using SPSS software version 20.
Results:
Mean duration of follow up was 62.34±5.51months in resident group and 64.80±7.80 months in attending group (P=0.10). According to criterion A and B, there was no statistically significant difference in term of success between two groups (P=0.670 and P=0.888 respectively). Repeated glaucoma surgery was needed in 12.2 % of patients in the resident group and in 2.4% of patients in the attending group. Rate of complications was 12.2% and 4.8% in the residents and the attending group respectively.
Conclusion:
The outcome of resident performed trabeculectomy is comparable to attending performed trabeculectomy but rates of complications and need for repeated surgery was more in resident group.
