Purpose:
|
The purpose of the present study was to compare topical Mitomycin-c intraoperativly with subconjunctival Avastin in pterygium surgery.
|
Methods:
|
In this study, 83 eyes of 81 patients with pterygium were divided into two groups, A and B.
In group A, 47 eyes; in group B, 36 eyes underwent pterygium removal. In group A subconjunctival injection 0.1 cc Avastin (2.5 mg) was done and in group B the applicator soaked in mitomycin 0.02% for 1 minute applaied intraoperatively. Then during of one year followup, patients were evaluated according of outcome or possible complication.

Results:
|
The recurrence rate in group A was 23.4% and in group B, 25% that the difference were not statistically significant.
The foreign body sensation of, Avastin was 6.3% lesser than mitomycin. The photophobia, red eye, eye discharge and eye dryness discomfort rate of mitomycin respectively were 8%, 20.1%, 3.8% and 3.4% better results than Avastin.

Conclusion:
|
In this study, 20 eyes (24%) of 83 eyes in two groups have recurrent pterygium. The rate of recurrence compared of Bare-Sclera from 30-70% after pterygium simple surgical technique has shown remarkable reduction in recurrent.
