Purpose:
Ophthalmology residents are required to undertake training in trabeculectomy before they qualify as ophthalmologist, and an assessment of these skills is a critical element of their fitness to practice. The purpose of this prospective study is to describe the reliability and feasibility of a new method called Video observational technical ability (VOTA) in assessment of trabeculecyomy technical ability of residents.
Methods:
At the end of the 3 month training course of the residency program in Farabi Eye Hospital, the assessor evaluate the technical ability of 10 residents in performing trabeculectomy first directly during procedure and then after recoding their procedure (VOPS). Different steps of trabeculectomy was evaluated and scored from 1-5. DOPS (Direct Observation of Procedural Skills) and VOPS (Video Observation of Procedural Skills) score were compared statistically.
Results:
VOPS leads to lower score than DOPS (8.4 vs 8.9, p=0.02). There was a good correlation between technical ability item of DOPS and VOPS. (r=0.89, p=0.001).
Conclusion:
The use of VOPS can provide an insightful perspective of a residents’ assessment of trabeculecyomy technical ability.
